Liability and copyright

Content

The content of this website is created with great care, but there is no guarantee that it is accurate, complete or up to date. As a service provider, the developer is responsible for his own content under general law. He is not obliged to monitor third-party information that is transmitted or stored, or to look for signs of illegal activity. Once a specific infringement becomes known, the content is removed right away.

Links

This website links to external sites, such as the App Store, whose content is outside the developer’s control. Their providers are responsible for them. The linked pages were checked for legal violations when the link was set, and none were apparent. If an infringement becomes known, the link is removed.

Copyright

Texts, images, videos and design on this website are subject to German copyright law. Copying, editing or distributing them beyond the limits of copyright law needs the written consent of the author.

Website privacy

This part covers the website masoc.app, including its visitor statistics and the newsletter signup. The masoc app for iPhone, iPad and Mac has its own Privacy Policy.

The controller under the GDPR is Joshua Hoffmann, reachable at mail at masoc.app.

Hosting and server logs

masoc.app is hosted by STRATO GmbH, Otto-Ostrowski-Straße 7, 10249 Berlin, Germany, on servers in Germany.

When you open a page, your browser sends technical data that the server records in log files: the page requested, date and time, the amount of data transferred, the page you came from, your browser and operating system, and your IP address, which Strato anonymizes in these logs. This is needed to deliver the website and keep it secure, based on the legitimate interest in running it (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

All connections to masoc.app are encrypted.

Visitor statistics

What is recorded

masoc.app counts its visits with its own statistics, which run on the same Strato server in Germany. No third-party analytics service is involved, and there are no cookies, no tracking pixels, no advertising and no social media plugins.

When you open a page, a small script sends: your IP address; details of your browser and device, such as model, system, screen and window size, language, time zone, light or dark mode, connection type and the client hints your browser offers; the page you came from and campaign tags in the link; the pages you open, how long you stay and how far you scroll; which parts of a page you see; clicks on the App Store and newsletter buttons, and which of the two was clicked; clicks on links to other sites and on the email link; whether a newsletter signup was completed; and how fast the pages loaded.

From the IP address, a database on the same server (IP geolocation by DB-IP) derives an approximate location (country, region, city) and the name of your network provider. Nothing is sent to anyone for this. Images and videos come from masoc.app itself and text uses the fonts already on your device, so opening a page sends nothing to third parties. Links to the App Store or other sites only send data to them once you click.

Stored in your browser

A random ID in your browser’s local storage recognizes return visits and keeps one visit together across pages. It contains nothing about you. You can remove it by clearing the website data for masoc.app.

Encrypted, and what for

Everything is encrypted before it is stored. Only the site owner can decrypt it, with a password that is not kept on the server. The statistics show how people find masoc and what interests them, so the website and the app can get better. They are not shared, not sold and not used for advertising. The legal basis is the legitimate interest in understanding how the website is used (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

How long, and how to object

The data is kept without a fixed deletion date. You can object at any time by writing to mail at masoc.app. Content blockers and the tracking protection of your browser also stop the statistics.

Newsletter

What is stored

When you sign up for the newsletter, masoc.app stores your first and last name, your email address, what you write about yourself, the time of signup, the version of the consent text you agreed to and your IP address as proof of your consent. All of it is stored encrypted on the server at Strato in Germany.

A keyed hash of your email address and IP address prevents duplicate signups and limits how many signups come from one network. While you type, the page asks the server whether your email domain can receive mail. Only the domain, such as example.com, is checked, and nothing about it is stored.

What it is used for

Your data is used only to send you the newsletter, with news about the launch of masoc and about the app. Emails are sent through Strato’s mail server. Your data is never shared with other third parties.

If you joined the masoc beta before October 12, 2026, your name and email address were also passed to Apple to send your TestFlight invitation. Apple handles them under the Apple Privacy Policy.

Your consent

The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw it at any time, through the link in every email or by writing to mail at masoc.app. Your data is then deleted for good. Only a keyed hash of your email address is kept, so that you can’t be added again by mistake.

Writing to masoc

If you write to masoc by email, your address and message are used only to answer you, based on the legitimate interest in replying (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). They are deleted once the conversation is finished, unless the law requires keeping them longer.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access the personal data held about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable format. You can withdraw a consent at any time with effect for the future. You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection authority, for example the one where you live.

For any of this, write to mail at masoc.app.
