Who is responsible
masoc is made by Joshua Hoffmann, an independent developer in Germany. He is the controller for the little personal data this policy covers.
For any question about your privacy, write to mail at masoc.app.
This policy covers the masoc app on iPhone, iPad and Mac, together with its share extension and Live Activity. The website and its newsletter are covered on the legal page.
What masoc never does
- There is no account and no login.
- There are no analytics, no usage tracking and no advertising, and masoc never tracks you across other apps or websites.
- masoc has no servers of its own. Your photos, edits and looks are never sent to the developer.
- No third-party SDK collects data. The only third-party code, OpenCV for stitching panoramas, runs on the device and never connects anywhere.
- Nothing is sold or shared, because there is nothing to sell.
In App Store terms: Data Not Collected.
What stays on your device
Everything you work with lives inside masoc on your device: the photos and videos you import, your edits, presets, looks, LUTs and settings. masoc keeps its own copy of every import, so your originals in Photos or Files are never changed.
Intelligence on the device
- Subject and sky masks, depth for background blur and retouching use models built into the app.
- Smart Edit uses Apple Intelligence on the device to turn your words into slider settings. Your requests are not stored.
Share extension and Live Activity
Files you send to masoc from another app go straight into masoc’s storage on the same device. The export progress on the Lock Screen is created on the device as well.
Deleting masoc removes all of this from the device. Whatever you synced stays in your iCloud until you remove it there.
Permissions
masoc asks for a permission only when you use the feature that needs it, and everything else keeps working if you say no.
- Photos, add only. To save exports to your library. masoc can’t see your library: importing uses the system picker, which hands over only the photos you choose.
- Microphone and speech recognition. Only when you tap the microphone in Smart Edit. Speech is transcribed on the device, and the recording is neither stored nor sent.
masoc never asks for your camera, location, contacts or permission to track. You can change every permission in Settings › Apps › masoc on iPhone and iPad, or in System Settings › Privacy & Security on Mac.
iCloud sync
iCloud sync is off until you turn it on in Settings › iCloud. Then masoc keeps the categories you choose, presets and profiles, photos and videos, together with their edits and previews, in the private database of your own iCloud account, using Apple’s CloudKit.
- This data belongs to your Apple Account. The developer can’t see or access it.
- The looks built into masoc are part of the app and are never uploaded.
- Apple stores and protects iCloud data under the Apple Privacy Policy.
You can pause or turn off sync at any time, and delete each category from iCloud in the same place. What is on each device stays there.
Maps and places
When a photo carries a location, its info panel shows it on a map from Apple Maps. Loading that map, looking up a place name and searching for a place while you edit a photo’s location send the area or your search text to Apple.
Apple handles these requests under its own privacy policy. masoc doesn’t receive or keep them, and the map only loads when you open it.
Exporting and sharing
You decide where an export goes, to Photos, to Files or into a share sheet, and whether its location, camera details and date travel with the file.
Once you share a photo, the app or person receiving it handles it under their own terms.
Feedback and diagnostics
Reports stay on the device
To help fix bugs, masoc notes when something fails, such as an export, an import, a sync or an AI step, and when it crashes or freezes. These reports are kept on the device in Settings › Feedback & Diagnostics, where you can read them, delete them or turn recording off. They describe what masoc was doing, including the edit settings of the photos involved, and contain no photos, no file names and no places. Nothing is sent automatically.
When you write in
Report a Problem, Suggest a Feature and Share Feedback open your mail app with a message to the developer. It includes the app version, device model and system version, memory and free storage, language, region and theme, and whether iCloud sync and Apple Intelligence are on. Problem reports are attached only if you leave that switch on. You see everything before you send it.
Your email address, message and attachments are used only to answer you and to fix what went wrong. This is based on the legitimate interest in supporting the app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The conversation is deleted once it is no longer needed for that, unless the law requires keeping it longer.
Services by Apple
- App Store. Downloads, purchases and refunds are handled by Apple. The developer never sees your name or payment details, only anonymous download and sales figures.
- Crash reports. If you turned on Share With App Developers in your device’s analytics settings, Apple passes crash reports and usage statistics to the developer without information that identifies you. You can turn it off at any time.
- iCloud, Apple Intelligence and Apple Maps are provided by Apple as described above.
For all of these, the Apple Privacy Policy applies.
Children
masoc collects no personal data from anyone. Not from children, not from cats, not even from houseplants.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access the personal data held about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable format. You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection authority, for example the one where you live.
Since your data stays on your devices and in your own iCloud, most of it is already in your hands: delete it in masoc, in Settings › iCloud, or by deleting the app. For anything you sent by email, write to mail at masoc.app.
Changes to this policy
If masoc ever handles data differently, this page changes first, and the date at the top changes with it.
Questions about the app itself? The support page has answers and a direct line to the developer.
